OHNIG members now have a strong voice at the public policy table!
OHNIG has a presence at the decision making level of government provincially and nationally.
OHNIG will actively work on positive outcomes in public policy, organizational changes and individual health rights by
- Creating Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) for healthy work environments,
- Participating in responses, submissions and political statements
- Community emergency preparedness planning
- Monitoring and support a public health care system
- Influence legislature and health care policy especially as it protects the health and safety of the workers.
- Channel resources and energy to continuously act on healthy work environments for healthy workers
- Communicating political tactics to members
- Contributing to the planning of Primary Health Care (PHC) networks.
The voice of OHNIG members will respond to critical issues with timely solutions!

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
As occupational health nurses we need to be prepared for the dynamic changes
expected in the next decade!
As the business world and workplace environment
is changing more rapidly than ever before, so is occupational health nursing
specialty field. OHNIG members are encouraged to "think out of the box" and
"raise the bar" for occupational health nurses to cope with this rapidly
changing world.
To that end OHNIG will
- strengthen the public image of Occupational Health Nurses through education
and communication
- provide insight to the highly skilled professional nursing services
provided by Occupational Health Nurses
- Focus on "Practice in Action"
OHNIG members provide the guidance and leadership for planning and positioning
of Occupational Health Nurses into a value added model for all our key stake
holders.
OHNIG will proactively work in collaboration with all occupational health nurses to
- analyze occupational health trends that downgrade the worker’s health
- define ways to promote “healthy workers”
- identify and implement research evidence based best practices
- support healthy work environments best practice guidelines and environmental safety practices
- control leading causes of occupational and environmental health and safety exposures
- promote professional occupational health nurse standards of practice
OHNIG has a public educational "Practice Page" that highlights a work day for an occupational health
nurse.

EDUCATION
OHNIG supports newcomers to the field of Occupational Health!
Occupational Health Nurses are registered nurses (RNs). Typically, nurses entering the field have nursing
skills that assist them to make the transition to Occupational Health Nurse. Related nursing experience could include work experience
in community health, ambulatory care, critical care or emergency nursing, as well business administration
expertise and a baccalaureate degree in nursing would be an asset.

Certification in occupational and environmental health nursing is highly recommended. Licensed RNs who meet
the qualifications may apply to write their Occupational Health Nursing Certification (COHN- C) national
examination CNA.
OHNIG promotes nursing practice 'Professional Excellence' through encouraging member to continually upgrade their level of education.

- Best Practice Guidelines for Clinical Practice
- Best Practice Guidelines for Healthy Work Environments
- Continuing certification opportunities

- Employer 'due diligence' requirements for the workers well being

- Promoting safe working practices
- Protecting workers from workplace hazards
OHNIG will provide links to many education resources to enhance the expertise of the occupational health nurse seeking to qualify for further designation to
- Identify environmental hazards
- Recognize potential physical and mental demands
- Create proactive prevention measures to eliminate injuries and illnesses.
- Employ disability management strategies for the safe return to work
