OHNIG acts as the Champion for Occupational Health Nursing!


In a changing global environment it is paramount for OHNIG members to create professional relationships, build a strong professional association and stay informed.

As one of many professional nursing interest groups within RNAO, the OHNIG members are provided the opportunity to speak out for the specialized nursing profession of occupational and environmental health and safety.  See Occupational Health Nurse Interest Group.

OHNIG offers LEADERSHIP!

OHNIG acts as the voice and forum for the specialized area of occupational health nursing. OHNIG provides recognition of the valuable services of an occupational health nurses to all our stakeholders! Belonging to the RNAO network of professional nurses allows OHNIG to access all the numerous resources and professional support systems, both personal and sometimes financial, through bursaries and awards.

OHNIG offers MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH!

OHNIG members flourish by partnering with each other and with related alliances to better

  • Understand our members needs first
  • Communicate issues to members
  • Seek alliances with other nursing associations
  • Learn from other nursing professionals.
  • Seek new affiliations to enhance our profession
  • Join organizations with common interests
  • Develop current linkages for education
  • Strengthen our relationships in a collegial and united fashion

OHNIG offers OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

OHNIG members strengthen their roles as occupational health nurse professionals by participating in

  • Student liaison programs
  • Speaker and Adviser Bureau
  • Ambassador recruitment and retention
  • Mentoring and Preceptoring

OHNIG offers COMMUNICATION

OHNIG continuously participates in public relations and communication through RNAO!

  • Access media contacts
  • Contribute to journal publications
  • Participate in radio and TV broadcasts
  • Coordinate timely newspaper story lines to "pitch"

OHNIG offers STRUCTURE

  • Following the RNAO guidelines for interest groups
  • Developing similar transparent methods of operation
  • Working in tandem with RNAO executive leaders for results
  • Following RNAO rules of governance, constitution, bylaws, organizational structure, required reporting to members and financial accountability.
  • Attending scheduled meetings i.e. annual general meeting, public affairs, membership, communication, practice guidelines recruitment and retention.
The Chairperson of OHNIG represents our members at the RNAO Assembly. This assembly brings together a meeting of like minds and allows the group leaders the opportunity to share information and be involved with the Ontario RNAO Board of Directors and their decision making process for Ontario nurses.
